Subclass 482 visa: When will the work experience requirement actually be reduced from 2 years to 1 year?

When Australia’s Federal Budget for 2024-25 was delivered by the Treasurer on 14 May 2024, the Australian Government had expressly confirmed in budget papers that from 23 November 2024, the work experience requirement for the Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482) visa would be reduced from two (2) years to one (1) year for all applicants:

@inclusivemigration Despite the Australian Government's announcement in the 2024-25 Federal Budget Papers that the work experience requirement for the Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482) visa would be reduced from 2 years to 1 year on 23 November 2024, this anticipated change has yet to come into effect (as of 12:00pm on Monday 25 November 2024). Unfortunately, as of 12:00pm on Monday 25 November 2024, the Department has yet to enact any legislation to reduce the work experience requirement for the Subclass 482 visa, nor has the Department made any announcements as to when and/or whether this change will be forthcoming. This is disappointing news for many prospective migrants who presently have at least one (1) year of full-time equivalent work experience in their nominated occupation and were hoping to be sponsored for a Subclass 482 visa as soon as possible, prior to the potential exclusion of their nominated occupation from the upcoming Skills in Demand visa.

The Department recently re-affirmed the replacement of the current Subclass 482 visa with the upcoming Skills in Demand visa by the end of 2024, and it is likely that the Skills in Demand visa will have a 1-year work experience requirement at least for the Specialist Skills Pathway and the Core Skills Pathway, while the Labour Agreement Pathway may otherwise contain various work experience concessions in certain circumstances.

Nonetheless, it remains to be seen whether or not the work experience requirement will actually be reduced from 2 years to 1 year prior to the implementation of the new Skills in Demand visa.
