More Student (Subclass 500) visa and Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) visa changes

The Australian Government has made changes to the English Language requirements for Student (Subclass 500) visa and Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) visas which apply to all Subclass 500 and Subclass 485 visas lodged on or after 23 March 2024.

The minimum for both both visa programmes is now as follows:

Student (Subclass 500) visa

  • Overall IELTS test score of 6.0 or equivalent (up from 5.5), with a minimum score of 5.0 for each test component (reading, writing, speaking and listening)

  • To undertake a packaged ELICOS, overall IELTS test score of 5.0 or equivalent (up from 4.5)

  • To undertake university foundation or pathway programs that deliver reputable English language training, overall IELTS test score of 5.5 or equivalent

  • No change to students studying English only through ELICOS

  • Test is only valid for 2 years from the date of the test

Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) visa

  • Overall IELTS test score of 6.5 or equivalent (up from 6.0), with a minimum score of 5.5 for each test component (reading, writing, speaking and listening)

  • Test is only valid for 1 year from the date of the test
